I have been neglecting the blog. FB is too easy- i blame FB and it's probably somehow Wes's fault too. We haven't been up to anything earth shattering or even cool. Lucy loves school and I did have my first ever teacher conference a couple of weeks ago. That was a surreal experience. Parent-teacher conference and I was invited? Ok, but which grown-up is going to come with me? I got all weird and nervous about it. I stressed over what I would wear. I was twenty minutes early and I seriously considered baking cookies and taking them with me. I was able to suppress the cookie baking urge, but I was unable to stop myself from saying things like "Lucy is the best, we're really proud of her." Mrs. Sorensen was trying to have a serious conversation with me about Lucy's social and academic progress and I kept saying things like "It really is amazing how she almost stayed completely in the lines when she was coloring those mittens." "I know she can't zip a zipper, but that's MY fault because I always do it for her. We'll practice it at home, she'll have it down soon."

Mrs. Sorensen says Lucy is doing great. She is meeting all her milestones and gets along well socially. Mrs. Sorensen said that Lucy is well behaved and obviously does not like to get into trouble or be corrected (she gets that from me). My proudest moment was when Mrs. Sorensen said she can always count on Lucy to pull in the shy kid or the kid that is outside the group. Sure she can write her own name and practically read, but she is also KIND. I thought maybe this was the case, but having a unbiased third party proclaim it was great. I almost burst.

I am a totally annoying, but luckily Lucy is practically perfect in everyway.

I took Lucy to see Laughing Pizza on Sunday. Two new milestones in her development were marked by this trip.

1. She begged go to this concert after seeing a commercial for it somewhere. "Mommy, did you know we could see Laughing Pizza- LIVE IN CONCERT!" She is highly susceptible to marketing and boy, don't those marketers know it. Christmas should be super fun this year.

2. After the concert you could stand in line to meet them and have them sign autographs. She waited very patiently and was super excited. They signed her DVD and posed for this picture. During the concert they sang a song they had written about the product Plumpynut (food product that's saving starving children in Africa) so I told them that Lucy's nickname was Plumpynut. They thought it was very cute. In the car Lucy let me have it. She told me several times. "I did not want you to tell them my nickname was Plumpynut." Then, the next day when Wes asked about the concert she brought it up again. She gets embarrassed now. Embarrassed by her parents. I can't tell you how much fun this is going to be! Muahahahahahaha.

Another cute anecdote from the concert: One of their songs has the line "five fingers on each hand." I watched Lucy count the fingers on each of her hands during the song then she looked up at me very excited and yelled "Mommy, I have five fingers on each hand TOO!"

Such a happy revelation.

**Warning: Mommy rant**

This morning I put a pair of pants on Lucy (in all fairness she put them on herself, but I laid them out) and noticed right away that they were too short. Never mind that I just bought these pants three weeks ago- it's not her fault that she's growing I guess. What bothers me is that now that she's grown out of these pants she is firmly in the next section of the store. We are no longer shopping in the baby/toddler section.

I have been thrust (against my will) into the little girls' section. There will be no more clothing sized by month or with a T after the number. No more guidelines on the tags about what height and weight the size will fit. This alone is enough to cause the gnashing of teeth, but just to rub salt in the wound- all the clothes in the new section are apparently designed by Miley Cyrus or those of her ilk. This Mommy is not ready for her baby's bottom to be bedazzled. Nor am I ready to be the crotchety old lady in the little girls' section of the store muttering about the state children's clothing.

**This is a very old post that I wrote but then never published- found it today**

Have you met Lucy recently? If yes, then you know her vocabulary and pronunciation are better than most high school senior's that you'll meet. She has a lot to say and she doesn't mispronounce much. That is why I am really trying to cherish and remember the "toddlerisms" she comes up with. One day she is mispronouncing a word, and the next she's fixed it and it's gone. Yet another sign that the baby days that became toddler times are now growing up into child days. So here's a current list of some things she says that make me smile:

Ar-fur (Arthur- a favorite cartoon of hers)

fun-der (thunder) (obviously, the TH sound is tough)

roni mac n' cheese (macaroni and cheese)

flo (floor- and for the record I think she's already fixed this one)

La Luz loves ballet. She also wants to do gymnastics and swimming lessons and soccer. For now we're going to focus on ballet. Once she has that mastered I might consider another extracurricular. She says her favorite part of ballet class is the "free dance" portion. This does not surprise me not one little bit. My Luz is a free spirit if ever there was one. Happiest when she's making her own rules and everyone else is playing by them. Have you ever seen such a cute ballerina? Look at that form!

New Strategy

This is a picture of our new discipline strategy. I was so tired of begging Lucy to do things or feeling like I was threatening her all day. A co-worker uses this technique (with some variations) on her two kids and it sounded like it had possibility. Here's what we're doing. Lucy can "earn" these little decorator beads (which, will from here on out be referred to as marbles) by doing tasks she is asked right away without whining. Also, if we catch her doing something nice or something that is helpful she can get a marble for that too. She can then use her marbles to "purchase" activities and treats. We're only 24 hours into the new strategy, but so far it is working like magic. She is so excited to earn marbles that she put her pjs on by herself last night and put the silverware away out of the dishwasher. She managed to earn 10 marbles before bedtime and she decided to purchase 5 minutes of tub time and an extra bedtime story. The beauty is that even with these extras she was in bed on time because we weren't spending time bickering about the busy stuff in between.

This morning on the way to the babysitter's house she did have two concerns though. 1.) Does Papa know she can also earn marbles from him? and 2.) How many marbles does she need to earn for a trip to Africa?

This year Danielle and I took the kiddos to Mexico Beach, FL. It's just down the road from Cape San Blas. We're currently enjoying day two. There is a tropical storm that could make it rain the rest of the trip but so far the weather has been great. We had a perfect day on the beach yesterday and today we drove into Port Saint Joe to look for sea shells on their beach.

The kiddos remembered being buried in the sand last year and requested a repeat this year.

Today at 10:30am we will be meeting Lucy's preschool teacher for the first time. I am a nervous wreck. I want her to like me and I REALLY want her to like Lucy. I spent way longer than was necessary picking out Lucy's outfit for this brief meeting. Standing in front of her closet I was thinking that she needed something that reflected that she was loved and cared for and she herself was lovely- but you don't want to look like you're trying too hard. Finally, I selected a little sundress that she loves. Lucy could care less about this meeting, although she is somewhat intrigued that I'm leaving work to meet her and her Papa there. Does anyone else think this is all happening a little too rapidly?

Shuttle wrap

I found myself in Florida with Luz and Allison on the day of the last shuttle launch. I have heard from many coworkers who have covered shuttle launches how powerful of an experience it is. I was assigned to go to one a few years ago but that assignment was changed and a different crew went. I had always thought I would eventually get another one but that never happened and this one last Friday was scheduled to be the last shuttle launch, ever.

So I definitely wanted to go. But I also thought Luz would a) enjoy it and b) appreciate it later because it was an historic event.

It wasn't an easy sell though because while we were in Florida on a beach trip with family, we were on the other side of Florida so it did involve a long drive in the dead middle of the night. That, and the chance of the launch actually happening was rated 30%. We know though, that I am not very hassle averse, and am very history positive. I decided to check the status at 1:30AM which was the last announcement NASA would make before I would have to be driving to make it there. At 2:00AM the NASA website said they were continuing and starting fueling. So we packed up and left.

Allison and I were keeping it a surprise from Luz, only telling her we were "going to see something special". Since there was only a 30% chance of launch we didn't want to build it up too much. In fact, the scrub plan was that we would go to Disneyworld in Orlando and act like that was the "special thing" all along.

But it was still scheduled to launch as we got to Titusville and the weather appeared good to the eye. There were massive crowds of people which has the effect of convincing Luz that she is in a cool place. We had time to park, eat at a very busy Burger King and use some very busy porto-potties (I took Luz in, not a good experience, there was no paper so we did a kind of hammock thing were I held her over the hole). Then we wandered around looking for a spot to watch from. I had a bag with a couple cameras but in the end I didn't really have the space to set them all up.

As we walked, we explained to Luz that we were going to see a real spaceship take off, with real people on it and that they were representing the USA and that the ship had a name, and it was Atlantis. We also told her that it was important because it was the last time we would ever launch this kind of spaceship. She seemed pretty psyched, probably egged on by the buzzing crowd. We settled on a space of bog on the bank of the Indian River near (in?) Space View Park. It was only mildly crowded, probably due to the quasi solid black mud that served as the "ground". But we did have a clear view of the Kennedy Space Center so all was good. We only had around a half hour of a wait and then a guy with a TV started yelling updates.

After the guy yelled out a minute warning I grabbed Luz, put her on my shoulder and pointed to where the shuttle would launch from. We started a countdown but the yelling guy announced there would be a two minute delay. This seemed weird to me and I was worried because they never revised the 30% "good weather" prediction so I thought maybe they'd announce a bunch of short delays and then scrub it. But two minutes later we did another countdown and I convinced myself I could see smoke staring to billow out. After we got to zero, there was a bright flash and it slowly started to move up.

The shuttle climbed and the crowd cheered and Luz pumped her fist. There was cloud cover so the shuttle eventually punched the clouds rather than slowly disappearing into the sky. It was gone before the sound reached us, a giant familiar roar that sounded just like a rocket but a long time after you saw it take off. After staring at the smoke trail for a minute or two we joined the mass exodus. It is a spectacular sight, but it is also over pretty quickly.

Souvenirs were procured, Luz got a little shuttle (unfortunately it's Columbia but we'll worry about that later) that she has played with ever since. She seemed very impressed by the countdown so mostly the shuttle counts down and takes off over and over, but also occasionally goes to the moon, and does some commercial flights to "Africa" and "India".

Traffic was very slow to get off the main streets of Titusville but by the time we got to Interstate 95 it really wasn't that bad. We decided to stay in St. Augustine Florida and drive back the next day (arriving a short time before my shift was to start.)

Of course if I was really trying to take her to an historic event event in Florida last week I guess I would have taken her to the Orange County Courthouse on July 5th...

According to Wes- Lucy did great. He said she was better behaved and more polite for the people at the dentist's office than she was for him the rest of the day. She did not have any cavities, but the dentist did say her teeth are very close together and she will probably need braces down the line. Wes and I both spent significant amounts of time in the orthodontist's chair as teenagers and it looks like we've shared the love. Lucy won prizes throughout the visit and came home with a bag full of oral hygiene goodies- toothbrush, toothpaste, timer for brushing, toothbrush travel cap, flossers, floss, and some plastic toy junk. She apparently had a great time and has been requesting a return trip.

I decided at about 3p on Cinco de Mayo that I wanted to try to eat Mexican food for dinner. This was a fools errand to begin with because the weather was absolutely gorgeous and everyone and their brother in Atlanta wanted to be eating a taco, sipping a margarita outside on Cinco de Mayo. We put our name in at two restaurants within walking distance of each other and started praying for a miracle (our name being called sometime before midnight). Twenty minutes later just as we were coming to our senses and discussing packing it up- our name was called. The winning restaurant had a live band playing. We thought Lucy would really like listening to the band play. When we sat down I said something along those lines. She looked at me with her most serious face and said "No, I want to play WITH the band."

The problem is, this is not my call. I can't just say "ok" and let her play with the band. Wes and I told her she could ask the waiter and if he said it was ok then she could ask the band. Before the waiter got back to our table though the band took a break and we noticed some older kids up on stage. Wes took Lucy up to the stage and she asked if she could play the drums. Because she is Lucy and no one ever tells her no- they said "Sure!" She then proceeded to wow the band members and her Papa.

She later suffered a mild meltdown because she figured out that playing at the drums wasn't the same as playing WITH the band. Specifically, she wanted to sing. Maybe I should get her an agent.

I do not know why I can't seem to upload anything in actual chronological order today, but I can't so we're going to start this story with the conclusion. Lucy earned a medal! She was so excited and proud of herself. She told me "I LOVE racing!"

This is a picture from just seconds before all the 2-3 year olds took off running before the DJ got to say "ready, set, go." It took another 10 minutes to regroup everyone and start over.

Tiger Mom

Have you heard of the Tiger Mom book? It's basically a memoir of a woman raising kids in a very strict and demanding way. She is very tough on her daughters and demands perfection. I'll admit somedays- I have shades of Tiger Mom. It doesn't help that Lucy is actually exceptionally mature for her age and often lulls me into a false sense of having a much older child. The truth is, she is three. She has the vocabulary of an 8th grader, but she's three. She handles situations with the maturity of a mature three year old.

At dinner last night I think a lady considered calling DCFS on me.

We were at a nice-ish restaurant celebrating our neighbor Katie's birthday. We were seated and I gave Lucy her bag o' crayons to color on the brown paper table cloth. I looked away to hang my purse back on the chair and in that brief moment Lucy scribbled all over the white napkin with the black crayon. I picked it up and pointed to it asking "Is this paper?" She shook her head no- she knew this was going to be trouble. I asked "Do we color on anything besides paper?" She slowly shook her head no. "Well, when the waitress comes back you need to apologize for coloring on her white napkin."

A single gigantic tear rolls down her face. "Mommy, will she be angry?"

Wondering if I'm being a bit hard on her or if she's just working me over. "I don't know, but apologizing is the right thing to do."

I call the hostess over and tell her Lucy has something to tell her. With silent tears streaming down her face she apologizes. The hostess goes all "Oh honey, it's not a big deal. I'm not angry, it's ok." She switches out the napkin for a black one.

Silent tears and the saddest face you've ever seen continue for 10 minutes. The lady at the table next to us spends this entire time with her mouth wide open- giving me dirty looks.

Guess she thought I was a tiger mom.

Tonight at Chow Baby the waiter told us all to write our names on the paddles that go in the bowl you fix yourself. We all started writing on our paddles and Lucy was (I thought) scribbling on hers. The she holds it up and says- look Mommy! There was a perfect L and Y on the front and a U and C on the back. She wrote her name on her paddle because the waiter told her to. I didn't know she could write her name. She then proceeded to write it on the napkins several times. What makes it even more hilarious is that for the last month I've been writing her name for her and begging her to trace it or try to write it herself. She has refused me every.single.time. Then she busts out with her name tonight. Cause the waiter asked.
